Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Contents
How much does the service cost?
The service is an Australian Government initiative and is provided to GPs free of charge.

Is the service confidential?
Yes, you will be allocated a unique identification number that will be used for all communications in relation to each case and any information you provide to the psychiatrist about the patient must be de-identified. This ensures that patient confidentiality is not compromised.

The use of all information collected about your patient including any advice given by the psychiatrist will conform to the Australian Government Privacy Legislation requirements. The psychsupport.com.au service uses SSL to encrypt all communications over the internet (look for the padlock in your web browser).

What information about the patient should I provide?
You should be ready to provide any patient medical information that you believe will assist the psychiatrist to provide you with the most appropriate advice. Information such as the patient's age, gender, ethnicity, psychiatric history, relevant medical history, past and current treatments will aid the psychiatrist in providing you with effective advice.

Any information you provide about the patient must not contain the patient's name. It is important that you note the identification number in case you want to seek further consultation on the patient. When using the psychsupport.com.au service your patient identification numbers and details are stored under 'patient view'.

Can I be sure of the quality of the psychiatrist advice?
The psychiatrists have been selected for their understanding of general practice and the pressures and constraints in which you practise. You will be informed of the name of the psychiatrist providing you with advice. The psychiatrists are providing advice only. Primary responsibility for patient care remains your responsibility and is not at any stage transferred to the psychiatrist providing the advice.

How often can I ask for psychiatrist advice?
There is no limit or quota on the number of questions you can ask per patient or on the number of patients you can ask about.

Why should I use the service?
The service will enable you to obtain psychiatrist advice for any patient who presents with a mental health condition that you may otherwise have difficulty accessing within 24 hours. Once you have used the service we encourage you to provide us with feedback. All comments and suggestions are welcome.

How does psychsupport.com.au work?
It is a bit like an email service, but all messages you send and receive must be viewed from this web site. This will ensure that confidentiality, response time (24h), and security rules are applied to all questions you ask. It also means that you can use the service from anywhere with internet access, not just your computer.
